25 July 2024

The Energy and Power Systems Group at TUMCREATE held a workshop on renewable energies in ASEAN. Members of the project Singapore's Pathway to Carbon Neutrality and two guest speakers presented their work and shared the views. I chaired the workshop and gave an overview of the project.

The ASEAN region has abundant resources of renewable energies, particularly solar power due to its location close to the equator. But also biomass, hydropower as well as geothermal power in Indonesia and the Philippines or wind power in the Philippines and Vietnam are promising resources.
The workshop was held in the context of the project Singapore's Pathway to Carbon Neutrality: Analysis of new Technologies by the Energy and Power Systems Group at TUMCREATE and NTU.
Professor Hamacher from TUM opened the workshop with an overview of the ASEAN energy system and the potential of renewable energies in the region. Dr Zulfikar Yurnaidi from the ASEAN Centre for Energy talked about the energy transition in ASEAN. Associate Professor Azlin Mohd Azmi from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia, presented findings of a policy case study on photovoltaics in Malaysia. After I had presented a short overview of our Carbon Neutrality project, Professor S Viswanathan from NTU presented findings on the logistics design for electricity imports to Singapore. This was followed by a talk by Mr Shiddaling Devihosur, research associate at TUMCREATE, on forecasting ASEAN's electricity demand. Finally, Ms Shwe Sin Han, research associate at TUMCREATE, presented her modelling results on a low-carbon ASEAN power system with renewable energies. The workshop was concluded with a panel discussion.
The workshop was well received with and attendance of approx. 50 people attending in person or online.
